Did you know that Other than consuming spices in minute amount and adding flavour to foods, spices and herbs also stimulate the appetite and some may have healing or soothing properties?

Herbs and spices usually lose their true bouquet and flavour after 6 months of shelf life. They should be stored in tightly covered containers away fro heat and light so that they will not become dry and stale.



Coriander: is a digestive aid, prevents infection from minor cuts, kills bacteria, fungi, and insect larvae that attack meat. It is an inflammatory that may help arthritis and may reduce blood sugar levels.

Caraway: is a digestive aid and is an antipasodic which soothes the digestive tract and aids in menstrual cramps.

Sage: is an antiperspirant, helps heal wounds and stop infections. It is used as a preservative. It will fight salmonella and is a good choice to add to foods that will be consumed away from home and outside. It is a digestive aid, reduces blood sugar (on an empty stomach), soothes sore throats.

Cinnamon: helps those with type 2 diabetes and has mild anticoagulant activity

Mint: It is a digestive aid, an anesthetic for the skin; it also fights infection in herpes, cold sores and wounds. Mint is good for cramps and menstrual promotion and should NOT be used by pregnant women.

Red pepper Know for its 'heat' consists of: Allspice which relieves pain to muscle and joints. Anise which is a cough remedy and digestive aid, promotes milk production in nursing mothers, and may relieve the pain of menstruation. Basil is good for intestinal parasites and acne.

Celery seed: is a diuretic that is good for weight loss, menstruation, high blood pressure.

Fenugreek: it had anti-diabetic powers. It prevents intestinal gas, is anti-ulcer, anti-diarrhea and anti-cancer. It also helps to lower blood pressure.

Turmeric: is a spice that contains curcumin, the ingredient that gives it its yellow colour. Curcumin is an anti-inflammatory agent and is useful for many diseases, including arthritis. It also eases stomach acid, lowers blood sugar and cholesterol, and prevents and treats cancer.

Saffron: lowers cholesterol, increases oxygen in the blood, reduces blood pressure, and stimulates the uterus. Pregnant women should avoid large amounts. It may also promote menstruation.

Parsley: is a diuretic which helps high blood pressure, and PMS. It is high in antioxidants so it is good for treating cancer. It neutralizes the carcinogens in cigarette smoke. It is a breath freshener, stimulates the uterus to promote menstruation, inhibits allergies and lowers fevers. Pregnant women should eat only culinary or cooking amounts.

Ginger: is used for nausea and motion sickness. It also prevents headaches, is an antibiotic  and anti-inflammatory. It boosts cholesterol (the good kind) and lowers LDL cholesterol (the bad kind).
